Top 10 OET Writing Mistakes to Avoid
The Writing sub-test is often considered the most challenging part of the OET preparation journey. Many highly skilled healthcare professionals fail to reach Grade B simply because they misunderstand the grading criteria.
Whether you are looking for an OET writing sample for nurses or general OET exam tips, avoiding these common pitfalls will drastically improve your score.
1. Including Irrelevant Case Notes
This is the number one reason candidates fail. You are not meant to copy the entire case history. The goal is to select *only* the information relevant to the reader. If you are writing to a physiotherapist, they do not need to know the patient had a mild rash three years ago.
2. Unclear Purpose in the Introduction
One of the best OET writing tips is to state the purpose of your letter immediately. The reader should know exactly why they are receiving the letter by the end of the first paragraph. Use clear phrasing like, "I am writing to refer Mr. Smith, who requires urgent assessment for suspected pneumonia."
3. Poor Paragraph Structuring
A wall of text is difficult to read. Group related information together. For example, dedicate one paragraph to the medical history, one to the current presentation, and a final paragraph to the requested action or discharge plan.
4. Overusing Medical Jargon
Always consider your audience. If you are writing a transfer letter to a nursing home facility manager (who may not be a doctor), using complex Latin medical abbreviations is inappropriate. Tailor your language to the recipient.
5. Ignoring the Word Count
The target length is 180-200 words. While you won't be penalized directly for being slightly over or under, a 300-word letter almost certainly includes irrelevant information, and a 120-word letter is likely missing crucial clinical details.
